Public power utilities across the US are celebrating Public Power Week October 4-10, 2026. While this event offers a moment to highlight the many benefits of community-owned electricity providers, it’s also an opportunity to feature the people who help keep the lights on. We are excited to share this employee spotlight on Niall Healy in the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's (SFPUC) Power Enterprise.

Born and raised in Ireland, Niall Healy moved to the United States when he was 19. His career has taken him across the country and through a variety of challenging jobs, including underground tunnel work for Muni’s Central Subway Project. About three years ago, he found his way to the SFPUC and its streetlights team. It’s a role that has given him a new and bright connection to the city he calls home.

As an Electrical Line Helper, Niall works behind the scenes to make sure the city’s lights are on when people need them. He installs new streetlights, checks wires, and replaces broken lightbulbs. He even assists with traffic control during these tasks to ensure pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles continue to flow safely along the city’s corridors.

It’s work that requires attention to detail and a sense of urgency. “When a streetlight is out or a pole needs attention, it can directly impact the community,” said Niall. “It’s important I stay focused, work quickly, and get the job done right.”

Niall considers one of the best parts of the job is the people. He’s quick to give credit to his Power colleagues for showing up every day with a good attitude and a willingness to work together.

The work itself is privilege for Niall, too. Knowing he helps maintain the infrastructure that lights up San Francisco gives him a real sense of pride. He also appreciates Hetch Hetchy Power and the legacy behind that electricity. Hetch Hetchy Power has generated clean energy for San Francisco for over 100 years. In addition to energizing streetlights, it also powers other municipal services and facilities, like Muni, San Francisco International Airport, and public schools.

For anyone considering a career in the electrical industry, Niall has some straightforward advice: keep learning. “Take as many courses and earn as many certificates as possible,” he says. It’s advice that reflects his own journey as well.
