October signals the arrival of fall: leaves transitioning to shades of red and orange, pumpkin spice lattes, and Halloween. Best part yet? It also starts with Public Power Week!
Every first full week of October, public power utilities across the country celebrate Public Power Week to highlight the benefits of not for profit, community-owned electricity providers. This looks like lower rates, cleaner energy, improved reliability, and more accountability.
Did you know that public power is part of San Francisco’s DNA? Through Hetch Hetchy Power, the SFPUC has been providing San Francisco with 100% greenhouse gas-free energy for more than 100 years. Hetch Hetchy Power is proud to serve more than 9,000 customer accounts, including many of the places and services we rely on daily, from libraries and public schools to City Hall, SFO, affordable housing sites, Muni and our world-famous cable cars – to name a few. Hetch Hetchy Power also electrifies some of the places that make San Francisco iconic, like the Ferry Building and the Salesforce Transit Center!
The SFPUC also operates CleanPowerSF, the City’s community choice energy program, which serves more than 385,000 residents and businesses. Since 2016, CleanPowerSF has:
- Saved CleanPowerSF customers over $146 million on their electricity bills compared to PG&E.
- Helped San Francisco reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity use by 99.7%.
- Committed $3.5 billion to new renewable and battery energy storage projects.
Together, Hetch Hetchy Power and CleanPowerSF meets 75% of the electricity demand in San Francisco with clean energy. As a not-for-profit electricity provider, the SFPUC does not pay shareholder profits. Instead, we reinvest our revenues back into the services and programs that help support our customers.
This Public Power Week, celebrate with us by honoring the hardworking employees, who care about the community and take pride in serving our family, friends and neighbors in San Francisco. You can also join the Public Power Week conversation on our social media channels to learn about how the SFPUC is expanding clean energy opportunities for all San Franciscans.
