Other Alternative Water Supplies
The SFPUC is investigating several projects to increase the capacity of our water storage. This includes the possibility of expanding existing reservoirs, converting other assets into reservoirs, or storing water in underground aquifers.
We are working with other regional water agencies to explore opportunities to transfer and exchange water to meet water supply demands, particularly during droughts and emergencies. Working together allows partnering agencies to leverage existing infrastructure and connections.

Alternative Water Supply Plan
The Alternative Water Supply Plan is a roadmap to guide water supply planning to help address projected supply shortfalls through 2045. The Plan represents the current thinking guiding the development of alternative water supplies for the SFPUC and is expected to be updated in Fiscal Year 2026-2027 as more information on planning drivers becomes available.

Alternative Water Supply Annual Progress Reports
Since the AWS Plan was published in February 2024, the Alternative Water Supply Program has prepared an annual report that updates the progress on new regional water supply projects. These projects are being developed within the SFPUC’s service area to address future water supply challenges and vulnerabilities, including meeting environmental flow requirements, adapting to regulatory changes, responding to shifts in demand, and preparing for climate impacts.
