Overview

Crews will recoat the exterior roof membrane on the Reservoir's North Basin to restore its protective barrier, which has reached the end of its useful life. This will help ensure that the roof remains watertight, supporting the continued protection and quality of the drinking water supply.

These upgrades will help maintain the reservoir’s long-term reliability and support the continued delivery of safe, high-quality drinking water to San Francisco customers.

Please Note: Because the coating must be applied to a completely dry surface, crews may occasionally work later in the day and on Saturdays to take advantage of favorable weather conditions and complete the work before the rainy season. On days when adjusted schedules are necessary, all work will conclude by 8:00 pm. Work performed after 5:00 pm will be limited to low-noise activities.

Project Background

University Mound Reservoir is one of the SFPUC’s largest in-city reservoirs, supplying drinking water to thousands of San Francisco residents. The protective coating on the North Basin roof has deteriorated due to prolonged exposure to the elements and has reached the end of its useful life.
Crews will recoat the exterior roof membrane to restore its protective barrier. This work will help ensure that the roof remains watertight, supporting the continued protection and quality of the drinking water supply.
Reapplying this coating will extend the roof warranty by another 20 years. These improvements will help maintain the reservoir’s long-term reliability and support the continued delivery of safe, high-quality drinking water to San Francisco customers.
What to Expect

All work will take place within the Reservoir’s enclosed area. No parking restrictions or traffic impacts are expected.
There will be no impacts to water service during the project.
During the coating application, crews will apply the material to the roof using squeegees. Spray application is not anticipated.
Residents may notice some noise during work hours. Temporary odors may also be present while the coating is being applied. These odors typically dissipate within a few hours after the coating has cured.
Because the coating must be applied to a completely dry surface, crews may occasionally work later in the day and on Saturdays to take advantage of favorable weather conditions and complete the work before the rainy season.
