Save Energy and Manage Your Electricity Bill
There are simple actions you can take to save energy at home. Using less energy is good for the planet and can help manage your electricity bill.
Hetch Hetchy Power customers can also check their online account at MyAccount-Power to see how much energy they use every month.

Adjust Appliance Settings
- Adjust your thermostat and take advantage of automatic settings. If needed, talk with your property manager for a tutorial on setting your thermostat.
- Set your water heater to 120°F to reduce energy use by 22% on water heating every year.
- Wash full loads of laundry on lower temperature settings.
- Keep your refrigerator at 38°F. Refrigerators are among the most energy-intensive appliances.
Use Appliances Efficiently
- Use smaller appliances like microwaves, toaster ovens, or stovetops instead of conventional ovens.
- Plug electronics into power strips and turn them off when not in use.
- Use fans or space heaters instead of central heating when appropriate.
- Open the dishwasher door after the wash cycle and let the dishes air dry.
- Avoid leaving the refrigerator doors open and letting the cool air out.
Other Ideas
- Use your windows to your advantage! Open windows to let cool air in instead of turning on the AC or close windows to keep warm air inside on cold days.
- Open your blinds and let the sun naturally warm your home in the winter. Conversely, close your blinds on hot summer days to help keep your home cool.
- Check around your doors and windows for drafts. You can use caulking or foam insulation to seal leaks and keep your home warm.
