Public Power Week celebrates publicly owned utilities, like the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), and all the benefits they provide to our customers such as affordable rates and reliable power.
Yet, we couldn't do this without our committed workforce. SFPUC staff work around the clock to construct, maintain, and repair electrical infrastructure, keeping San Francisco safe, illuminated, and electrified 24/7.
Get to know those behind the scenes who provide San Francisco communities with public power; meet Nestor Nido, a proud SFPUC Storekeeper of the Power Enterprise.
Brightening San Francisco Every Day
As a Storekeeper for the SFPUC, Nestor is responsible for managing and overseeing four departments and their warehouses: streetlights, meter shop, Treasure Island’s gas, and high voltage. The work Nestor and his colleagues do every day is critical to ensure San Franciscans receive clean, reliable electricity—no matter what. Nestor explains, “If we don't have any poles, if we don't have any lights, [then] it's dark on the street, so we cannot help out our community to be safe.”

Every day, Nestor ensures his colleagues have the right materials needed to complete their work as quickly and safely as possible. This helps keep San Francisco illuminated and safe.
Positivity Radiating Through Nestor’s Work
What does Nestor love most about his job? It’s helping and being part of a team that keeps San Francisco’s power running 24/7/365. This is what drew him to the SFPUC in the first place. Nestor comes in smiling every day, bringing positive energy to work to help lift the mood of his colleagues. “It’s important to start the day on a positive note, and that can be done through simply smiling!” he said.
So, as we celebrate Hetch Hetchy Power and public power utilities nationwide, let’s acknowledge Nestor and all those who help deliver affordable, reliable, and clean public power with pride. The SFPUC is proud to have Storekeeper Nestor who brightens San Francisco communities and every room he goes into.
