Built in 1952, the Southeast Treatment Plant is the City’s largest wastewater treatment facility, but many of its facilities are past their useful life and generate odors that impact the neighborhood. We are investing over $3 billion in critical upgrades to transform this facility into a modern resource recovery center. By doing so, we will continue to protect our communities and environment while creating an attractive workplace and neighborhood asset. Building Infrastructure Locally for Decentralized Water Systems (BILD) is a new initiative of the SFPUC and the National Blue Ribbon Commission for Onsite Water Systems (NBRC) to help build cross-sector coalitions to expand decentralized water systems. BILD was formed as a collaborative global community of practice working to uncover opportunities, advance implementation, and spread transformative solutions related to decentralized water systems to support the efficient use and reuse of water. Since launching San Francisco’s Onsite Water Reuse Program, the SFPUC has been leading a national effort to advance onsite water reuse. Chaired by the SFPUC, the National Blue Ribbon Commission (NBRC) was formed in 2016 to advance best management practices to support the use of onsite water systems within individual buildings or at the local scale. Led by the SFPUC’s vision and leadership, the NBRC was established to craft model state policy and develop resources for the safe implementation of onsite systems.
