More than 95,000 tests conducted, zero PFAS detected, all state & federal standards met

سان فرانسيسكو — Clean, safe, reliable drinking water is one of the most important services any city can provide. In San Francisco, it is also a public health success story worth celebrating. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) 30th Annual Water Quality Report shows the City’s drinking water met or exceeded all federal and state water quality standards in 2025, reflecting extensive testing, protected watersheds, and long-term investment in the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System. 

“Every year for decades, this report has given our customers a clear look at the testing, standards, and safeguards behind the water they rely on every day,” said المدير العام SFPUC دينيس هيريرا. “That transparency is important. The water quality results that you see reflect generations of careful stewardship, from protecting the environment to investing in a system that is vital to communities across the region. We are proud of that record, and we are committed to building on it for the next 100 years.”

• No PFAS Detected: Testing showed no presence of per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances, otherwise known as PFAS. These are a group of synthetic chemicals – commonly referred to as “forever chemicals” – that have been linked to adverse health effects. They’ve been used since the 1940s to make products resistant to heat, oil, stains, grease, and water.
• Extensive Water Quality Testing: The SFPUC conducted more than 95,000 tests for various contaminants to ensure San Francisco’s drinking water met all regulatory standards.
• Protected Water Sources: Healthy watersheds produce high-quality water. By carefully managing and protecting the lands where our water comes from, we help maintain the highest water quality possible. Our watersheds also provide a haven for rare and endangered species.
• Water Meets or Surpasses All Regulatory Standards: The water we serve is fully compliant with all state and federal health regulations, including those for microbial, inorganic, and organic substances.
• Ratepayer Dollars at Work: Construction of a major upgrade to the Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant began in 2024. The project will add a new treatment method called ozonation. Ozone destroys organic material that can affect the taste and smell of drinking water. With this upgrade, the East Bay plant will join the SFPUC’s Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant on the Peninsula in using ozone to improve drinking water quality. The Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant Ozonation project also earned an Envision Award for sustainable infrastructure, marking the SFPUC’s fourth Envision recognition في السنوات الست الماضية. 

The SFPUC’s water quality team monitors the system around-the-clock, employing advanced technologies and rigorous protocols to safeguard public health. The agency also manages more than 60,000 acres of watershed lands to protect water sources and preserve habitats for endangered species.
