CleanPowerSF Marks 10 Years with New Bill Credits to Help Customers Go Electric
Residents and businesses can save on electric appliances for cooling, heating, cooking and more
SAN FRANCISCO – CleanPowerSF is marking its 10-year anniversary by launching new bill credits to help residents switch to clean, electric home appliances and lower their energy bills.
CleanPowerSF is San Francisco’s community clean electricity program, run by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and serving customers since 2016. It currently powers more than 385,000 homes and businesses.
The new customer incentive program, Electrify Your Home, supports upgrades to zero-emission home appliances such as electric clothes dryers, heat pump water heaters (electric water heaters that draw heat from the surrounding air), HVAC heat pumps, and electric stoves and other cooking equipment as well as gas meter removal.
Customers can receive bill credits ranging from $150 for an electric stove to $300 for an electric clothes dryer to $1,200 for a heat pump water heater or HVAC heat pump. Credits are applied directly to customers’ CleanPowerSF electric bills, up to $50 per month, until the full amount is reached. For example, a customer who bought an electric clothes dryer would get $50 off their monthly bill for six months for a total of $300 in credits. Income-qualified customers are eligible for an additional $600 in added credits.
“San Francisco has delivered clean hydropower to public services like Muni and the airport for more than 100 years,” said SFPUC General Manager Dennis Herrera. “Ten years ago, we started supplying clean electricity to homes and businesses through CleanPowerSF, cutting emissions from electricity use by nearly 100% and saving customers millions of dollars compared to what they would have paid PG&E. Now, these new bill credits are making it easier for customers to switch from gas to electric appliances at home and reduce emissions even further.”
CleanPowerSF milestones at a glance:
- Saved customers more than $146 million on electricity bills compared to PG&E
- Delivered 100% clean and renewable electricity in 2023, reducing emissions from producing electricity to near zero and supporting the City's goal of net-zero emissions by 2040
- Grew from serving about 7,800 in 2016 to more than 385,000 customer accounts today
- Committed about $3.5 billion to new renewable energy and battery storage projects, significantly expanding clean energy supplies and supporting clean energy jobs across California
CleanPowerSF also has earned national and international recognition. In 2025, the U.S. Conference of Mayors awarded San Francisco first place in the large city category for climate action, citing its progress in cutting emissions, delivering 100% renewable electricity, and expanding access to clean, affordable energy through CleanPowerSF. In 2019, C40 Cities, a global network of major cities advancing climate solutions, recognized San Francisco and CleanPowerSF with its Transformative Change award for giving customers the option to choose renewable and low-carbon electricity at competitive rates.
About CleanPowerSF and Hetch Hetchy Power
CleanPowerSF began serving customers in 2016 with a mission to provide San Francisco residents and businesses with clean, renewable electricity at competitive rates. CleanPowerSF buys clean energy from different producers, including through long-term contracts. It is one of two clean energy programs the SFPUC operates.
The SFPUC also operates Hetch Hetchy Power, which generates and delivers 100% greenhouse gas-free energy to approximately 9,000 customer accounts, including municipal buildings and facilities, such as San Francisco General Hospital, San Francisco International Airport, schools, libraries, and the Muni transit system. Hetch Hetchy Power also provides electricity to some commercial and residential developments, including newly redeveloped properties and affordable housing sites.
