They mastered new software tools. They shadowed mentors and documented site visits. They defended big ideas in spirited debates and explored different careers. These are just a few of the experience's students tackled at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) this summer as part of the Project Pull internship program. By seeing firsthand the agency’s design, construction, and maintenance work, these 55 high school and college interns discovered how their education translates beyond campus – and caught a powerful glimpse into their own futures.

Major infrastructure projects can cost hundreds of millions, or even billions, of dollars. Rather than paying the full cost upfront, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) borrows money by issuing municipal bonds, which are purchased by investors, and repays that money over time. This allows the SFPUC to make needed upgrades now without a large, upfront increase in customer bills. Spreading the cost over time also means today's ratepayers don't bear the full cost of infrastructure that will serve customers for decades.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is powering the next generation of learners. During the 2025–2026 school year, the CleanPowerSF team partnered with San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and the San Francisco Environment Department (SFE) to educate students about climate change and renewable energy. Through hands-on activities, these kids discovered how we transform everyday sunshine into grid-ready power and how local communities are building climate resilience.
