Juneteenth commemorates the day (June 19, 1865) when federal troops arrived in Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring enslaved people in Confederate states to be legally free. This occurred more than two years after the order was issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Although it wasn’t designated a federal holiday until 2021, Juneteenth has been long celebrated by Black communities and now represents the larger importance of Black history and resilience.

At the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), staying calm under pressure is part of the job description. So, when a sudden break in the Calaveras Reservoir pipeline earlier this year threatened to impact customers and turn into a lengthy delay, the SFPUC's fast-acting operations team in Sunol was ready and sprang into action. Thanks to their preparedness and a diesel pump at the ready, the SFPUC continued to provide water without disruption to our wholesale customers and the pipeline was repaired in a record 12 days.

We all know the cliché of “too many cooks in the kitchen.” When the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's (SFPUC) Infrastructure team behind the Ocean Beach Climate Change Adaptation Project needed to coordinate with more than 20 government agencies and community groups on an environmental impact report (EIR), it could have easily been a recipe for disaster. The team, however, embraced the challenge and took collaboration and community input to a new level to deliver an exceptional EIR. Their work was recently recognized by the Association of Environmental Professionals (AEP) with an award of merit for outstanding environmental analysis document.

When guests stop by Hummingbird Farm, the SFPUC rolls out the “green” carpet of vibrant flowers and thriving native crops. That same welcome greeted Wade Crowfoot, California State Secretary of Natural Resources, during a recent visit as part of a conservation and urban biodiversity tour of San Francisco. Secretary Crowfoot leads California’s efforts to conserve the state’s environment and natural resources.

When a car needs a tune-up, a mechanic simply pops the hood to gain access to the engine. But what happens when a massive, early-20th-century dam needs repair and its parts are nearly 300 feet under water? In installing a new bulkhead system for the O’Shaughnessy Dam last year, the SFPUC’s project team found that maintaining the dam involved going deep – literally.
