Overview

Critical upgrades to our aging water and sewer infrastructure are planned for:

Hampshire and York streets between Mariposa and Cesar Chavez streets
Bryant Street between Precita Avenue and 26th Street
23rd and 25th streets between Hampshire Street and Potrero Avenue
26th Street between Bryant and Hampshire streets
Cesar Chavez Street between Hampshire Street and the Bayshore Boulevard on-ramp

This project will include 8-inch and 12-inch ductile iron water main replacement, 16-inch earthquake resistant ductile iron water main installation, sewer replacement, and pavement restoration.

Construction Look Ahead

Week of June 9

Final paving - Hampshire Street between 18th and 24th streets; 23rd Street between Hampshire Street and Potrero Avenue; and 26th Street between Hampshire and Bryant streets
- Monday, June 9: Street grinding on Hampshire Street between 18th and 21st streets; Minimal impacts to driveway access.
- Tuesday, June 10: Asphalt repaving on Hampshire Street between 18th and 20th streets; Streets temporarily closed 7am - 5pm
- Wednesday, June 11: Street grinding on Hampshire Street between 21st and 24th streets; 23rd Street between Hampshire Street and Potrero Avenue; and 26th Street between Hampshire and Bryant streets; Minimal impacts to driveway access.
- Thursday, June 12: Asphalt repaving on Hampshire Street between 20th and 23rd streets; Streets temporarily closed 7am - 5pm
- Friday, June 13: Asphalt repaving on Hampshire Street between 23rd and 24th streets; 23rd Street between Hampshire Street and Potrero Avenue; and 26th Street between Hampshire and Bryant streets; Streets temporarily closed 7am - 5pm

Project Background

Underground water and sewer pipes that are approaching the end of their useful life will be upgraded to maintain critical utility services and avoid disruptive emergency repairs.

In addition to replacing approximately one mile combined of 8-inch and 12-inch ductile iron water mains and nearly one mile of sewer mains, this project will also install approximately 1.2 miles of 16-inch earthquake resistant ductile iron pipe that will be part of the seismic backbone for water support to San Francisco General Hospital in the event of an earthquake.

The project will also build curb ramps to facilitate accessibility in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
What to Expect During Construction

Water System Upgrades: Rehabilitate or replace water mains and connect existing water service laterals - anticipated to last approximately two to three months per block.

Sewer System Upgrades: Rehabilitate or replace sewer mains and connect existing laterals - anticipated to last approximately one to two months per block.

Roadway Repaving: Once the entire project has been completed, final paving will be performed, which is expected to take a few days per block.

Construction activities on any given block will occur at various times over the course of the work. Work will not be happening on your block for the entire project duration. Water and sewer main installation is done in phases, so there may be periods of inactivity during the work dates.

Water and sewer main installation involves street excavation throughout the project area. This work may create noise, vibration, dust, and parking/traffic impacts in the work zone.

Traffic control and "No Parking/Tow Away" signs will be posted when we are getting ready to begin work on your block. Local access for residents, deliveries, and emergency services will be provided at all times during work hours. We request that you assist us by limiting your use of the roadways within the construction work areas during working hours for the safety of the public and our employees, and to park in driveways or on adjacent blocks when No Parking zones are posted.

Should you need access to your property/driveway during work hours, please alert a crew member on site. Please note that there may be some slight delay to enter or exit your property/driveway to allow for crews to create a safe path of travel.

Water system upgrades will involve a temporary interruption of water services to connect each property's water service to the new water main. Advanced notice will be provided to affected properties when a brief water service disruption is required.

Although some inconvenience due to construction activity may be possible, we will do our best to minimize impacts as we work to complete these necessary utility infrastructure upgrades.
