Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is Hetch Hetchy Power?
For 100 years, the Hetch Hetchy Power System has been generating 100% greenhouse gas-free hydropower for San Francisco. As our drinking water flows downhill from Yosemite to the Bay Area, we harness the natural force of gravity to efficiently generate this clean electricity. Hetch Hetchy Poweralso includes renewable solar energy, generated right here in San Francisco.
Today, Hetch Hetchy Power energizes vital municipal services and infrastructure such as MUNI and San Francisco General Hospital, and large, private developments like Salesforce Transit Center. Learn more about the Hetch Hetchy Power System.
-
How is Hetch Hetchy Power different from getting electricity from PG&E?
After you submit your application, we'll review the financial requirements with your team and prepare your service agreements. Once the agreements are signed, we'll coordinate with PG&E to deliver Hetch Hetchy Power to your project. After service begins, SFPUC will manage your electric account, including billing, just as we do for water service.
-
How is Hetch Hetchy Power different from getting electricity from Direct Access?
Hetch Hetchy Power is San Francisco's public power utility, providing full-service electric utility support, including billing and customer service. Unlike Direct Access, where customers buy electricity from a private Electric Service Provider, Hetch Hetchy Power delivers 100% greenhouse gas-free electricity that meets all San Francisco clean energy requirements.
When you switch to Hetch Hetchy Power, we cover applicable exit fees. With Direct Access, customers are responsible for those costs. As a public utility, we also offer transparent rates and reinvest revenue back into the local community.
-
How much space is required for Hetch Hetchy Power?
We usually provide 12kV primary power to large new developments, which typically requires a switchgear system that takes up around 700 square feet of space (including clearances). Switchgear can be installed in most basement or garage spaces, and can be shared among multiple buildings and developments for up to 12MW of total power load. We will work with you to determine the best design and layout of the equipment.
-
Do I need to pay any fees?
Yes, you may incur fees as you submit an application for electric service, interconnect to solar systems and batteries, and more. Get more informtaion about fees you may be charged.
