Originally born in Pakistan, Azim Shaikh's upbringing instilled in him the values of hard work, responsibility, and giving back. These principles continue to guide him both in his role at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and in his everyday life.
Azim’s career at the SFPUC began in 2010 as a Water Quality Technician. His role involved monitoring wastewater, collecting samples from industries and restaurants, and ensuring that wastewater systems were functioning as they should. Over the years, his responsibilities expanded as he transitioned from a technician to a compliance inspector, and eventually to his current position. He manages the FOG (Fats, Oils, and Grease), Waste Hauler and Dental Mercury pretreatment programs. Notably, he oversees the EPA-mandated Waste Hauler program, ensuring 11 permitted porta potty providers comply with city regulations for safe waste disposal.

“I’ve always wanted to work for the city,” Azim shares. His background in industrial chemistry, paired with a minor in accounting, helped him navigate the technical demands of his job while also managing financial responsibilities, like issuing permits and billing waste haulers. “It’s all about keeping things in compliance and educating people about why it’s important to protect our environment," said Azim. "It’s not always glamorous work but it’s essential for protecting the environment and public health.”
Azim’s role is about more than just monitoring wastewater; it’s about preventing environmental harm before it happens. One of his major projects involves overseeing the FOG program with over 4,500 restaurants, where he and his team ensures that food service establishments follow the FOG Control Ordinance and have proper equipment to prevent grease from clogging San Francisco's sewer system.
He takes the time to help small businesses understand regulations, offering assistance when they’re struggling to comply. “We’re not here to shut businesses down. We want to help them succeed,” Azim says. He emphasizes patience and understanding, helping owners navigate financial challenges by connecting them with city resources.
Driven By Faith to Serve
Outside of work, Azim is just as committed to his community. He and his family sponsors meals at the Mission Islamic Center of San Francisco, where he serves as a board member and Treasurer. His family regularly prepares meals for people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco - an act rooted in the charitable principle at the heart of Islam that he deeply embraces.
In addition to his local efforts, Azim’s passion for water sustainability extends beyond his professional responsibilities. He has personally funded the construction of wells in underserved villages across India, providing communities with access to clean and reliable water sources. His role model growing up was his father, an electrical engineer who made sure his employees were well-fed and cared for in his factory. “I want to make the world better in whatever way I can,” Azim reflects, whether through his work or his charitable efforts.
For Azim, protecting the environment isn’t just a job - it’s a way of life. From educating the public about water conservation to ensuring the city's wastewater systems run safely and efficiently, he is deeply devoted to sustainability and community well-being. “Saving water, saving the earth,” he says with a smile, “that’s what it’s all about."
