Curbside EV Charging - Review
Powering Your Curbside EV Charging Station
Here is everything you need to know to power your new curbside electric vehicle (EV) charging station in San Francisco.
Overview
There are several ways to connect a curbside EV chraging station to electric service in San Francisco. The right option depends on your project location, available infrastructure, and service provider.
Who Provides Electric Service
Hetch Hetchy Power
Hetch Hetchy Power is San Francisco's publicly owned electric utility operated by the SFPUC. You can energize your charging station with Hetch Hetchy Power and connected via either:
- The SFPUC-owned electric grid, primarily in redevelopment areas and at City-owned sites
- PG&E's distribution system through a wholesale power delivery arrangement called the Wholesale Distribution Tarriff (WDT)
CleanPowerSF
CleanPowerSF is San Francisco's community electricity program, also operated by the SFPUC. You can power your charging station with CleanPowerSF in most areas throughout the city.
- Your new electric account for your charging station will be automatically enrolled in CleanPowerSF's Green service
- You could upgrade your electric account to CleanPowerSF's SuperGreen service to ensure your charger is powered entirely by 100% California-certified renewable energy
You may already be a CleanPowerSF customer. Not sure? Contact us at cleanpowersf@sfwater.org or call (415) 554-0773.
You may also elect to get service from PG&E if you are not currently a CleanPowerSF customer or could be served by Hetch Hetchy Power.
How Your Charging Station Connects to Power
Curbside EV chargers can typically be connected in one of two ways:
Existing Electrical Service
The charger is connected to available electrical capacity at a nearby building or facility. This can be referred to as a "behind the meter" approach.
New Electric Service
A new, dedicated electric service connection is installed specifically for the charging station.
Note that connecting to streetlight circuits is not offered in San Francisco at this time.
Get Started Today
Step 1: Identify a Site
Select a location that meets San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) requirements for curbside EV charging.
Step 2: Request Utility Review (If Needed)
If you need help determining which utility can serve your site, submit a Statement of Interest.
Please submit a separate form for each proposed charging location.
Step 3: Apply for Service
- If your charger will connect to an existing electric service and you know your current provider, you may apply directly to that provider.
- If your project requires a new electric service connection, we will determine the appropriate service provider.
All requests for new SFPUC electric service connections require an Application for Electric Service. Access the relevant application forms, process information, and fees on our Hetch Hetchy Power webpage for developers and projects.
